Exciton is currently the only softsynth from Groovecube. It’s available as a VST plugin for both Mac and PC. It aims at recreating the classic sound of vintage analog synthesizers without putting the focus on one particular model. Feature wise, it reminds me of an Oberheim OBXa and a Prophet 5, yet without having all the features of any of them. So in this matter, it has to be seen as an original design and it would be unfair to try to take it head-to-head with an original vintage.

Contrary to some of it’s competitors it doesn’t offer stand alone mode. But unless your sequencer host doesn’t support the VSTi format – and even then, a wrapper plugin should do the trick – this omission will hardly be missed since it’s demand on the CPU is rather light. There should be no need to consider running it on a dedicated computer, as opposed to Absynth or VirSyn Tera for instance. Also missing is multi-timbral mode. Again, since there’s nothing keeping you from running multiple instances of it, it shouldn’t be a problem for most users.
